The Moe Plumbing Story

As Told by Mike Davis, President, Moe Plumbing

Moe Plumbing 1927
What started over eighty years ago as a small family business is today one of the largest and most respected plumbing establishments in the southland. Now with over 200 dedicated employees, numerous awards for service, and a commitment to the customers and community it serves, Moe Plumbing is the "go to" company for all your plumbing needs.

Los Angeles in the 1920's

While a popular song of the day proclaimed "California, Here I Come," it took a whopping thirteen days to drive the distance from New York to Los Angeles. Nevertheless, during the twenties the population of Los Angeles grew from a mere half-million to more than 1.2 million. In terms of population this City of Angels came in fifth, just behind New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Detroit. In terms of area it was the largest, stretching from the vast agricultural fields and groves of the San Fernando Valley to the bustling ports of San Pedro and Wilmington.

Downtown LA 1920's
Newcomers found a city laced with streetcar lines and interurban electric railroads, and a brand new City Hall that broke the twelve-story earthquake limit, soaring to twenty-six floors. With roads being laid, houses being built, and oil wells being drilled, there was plenty of work to be found and all year long the skies were sunny and bright.

As the decade of the twenties roared on, blissfully barreling toward the abyss of a great depression, Herb Moe set up shop in nearby Glendale, California.

Along Came Moe

Glendale CA 1927
When Herb Moe first opened his Glendale establishment in 1927, he could scarcely have envisioned the success that the company he founded was destined to enjoy. Through good years and bad, Moe Plumbing stood for honesty and reliability - a good job at a fair price, with satisfaction guaranteed.

New Ownership

Thirty-seven years later, in 1964, the Davis family bought the company and has operated it ever since, continuing and building on the good will of the company's original founder.

On the Grow

Los Robles Hospital
In recent years, Moe Plumbing has enjoyed tremendous growth. Through numerous acquisitions, Moe's service capabilities have greatly expanded. In the year 2000, a significant addition to the Moe Plumbing family was the acquisition of the John K. Keefe Company - a Westside mainstay in Los Angeles since 1940, along with Burt Plumbing, a Hollywood institution since 1920. In 2006, C. "Herb" Berger Plumbing of Santa Monica, founded in 1924, was also acquired by Moe Plumbing. With eighteen acquisitions in all to date, and with decades upon decades of combined expertise, Moe Plumbing is able to serve the plumbing needs of an ever growing Southern California population. With an expanding service area, experience that is second to none, and with Moe's dedication to fairness and professionalism, it only makes sense to just call Moe!

Thinking Green

Doing Your Part

As the cost of energy soars and supplies dwindle, more and more people are starting to "think green". That is to say, they are seeking eco-friendly solutions in various areas of their life, like replacing traditional light bulbs with something more energy efficient, using cloth tote bags when grocery shopping, buying alternate fuel vehicles, recycling, and more! These lifestyle shifts, big and small, can have a positive affect on the environment, and often may leave you with a little extra green - in your wallet.

Moe Plumbing offers a couple of possibilities for your consideration:

Dual Flush Toilets

Dual Flush Toilets
A toilet so nice you flush it twice? No, don't do that! In response to government mandated water usage laws, enacted in 1992, Dual Flush toilets are designed to give you a flushing option -- a full flush for solid waste removal and a lesser volume flush for the other. This half flush / full flush technology can reduce water usage by up to 67% when compared to the traditional toilet that uses about three gallons in a single flush. These new fixtures are both efficient and stylish, and more than pay for themselves in water savings.

According to some estimates, switching to dual flush, water efficient toilets and other water saving plumbing fixtures could save the average household from $50 to $300 a year or more in water and sewer bills.

With dual flush, you can help save our environment, save money, and enjoy luxury plumbing. To find out more, just call Moe!

Assembly Bill 715

SACRAMENTO, CA. Governor Schwarzenegger recently signed legislation, AB 715, requiring the installation of high efficiency toilets, both dual flush and single flush models. The law makes California the first state in the nation to mandate high efficiency toilets (HETs), and is expected to save about 8 billion gallons of water annually. Phase one of the ruling begins January 2010 and requires that 100 percent of all toilets installed or sold by January 2014 be high efficiency modules.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless Water Heaters
Tankless water heaters have been popular in places like Europe and Asia for the past fifty years or more, and are just now gaining popularity here in North America. They work by way of a coiled tubing assembly, called a heat exchanger. Hot water is provided on demand, delivering a constant supply of hot water.

  • Though the initial cost of tankless water heaters is more than a traditional tank, in the long run, they can save you money.
  • Standard water heaters heat and reheat the same water. Tankless heaters heat water directly without the use of a storage tank, avoiding the standby heat losses.
  • Without a standing pilot, a tankless water heater will sit quietly doing nothing, not using any energy at all, not using or heating water.
  • If a tank type water heater springs a leak, you may be faced with a flood and water damage. Not so with a tankless water heater because there is no tank full of water to drain out all over your floor.
  • Tankless water heaters have a small footprint. They hang on a wall and range in size from a bread basket to a large medicine chest.
  • Ask your Moe Plumbing representative about the many benefits of a tankless water heater along with any possible tax credits, for installing one in your home. For more information, just call Moe!

Save Water - Save Money

A few simple steps can make a big difference when it comes to saving water in the bathroom.

  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, and rinse out the sink when you're finished.
  • Capture excess shower/bath water while waiting for it to change temperatures. Use it for watering plants.
  • Don't wait for the water to get hot before filling the tub for a bath. Adjust the water temperature as the tub fills.
  • Do not use the toilet as a trash receptacle for facial tissues, dust bunnies, etc. Only flush the toilet when disposing of sanitary waste.
  • Turn off the water while shaving. Use only a few inches of water in the bottom of the sink to rinse your razor.

Reverse Osmosis Filtration

Reducing Toxins & Pollutants

Understanding reverse osmosis is just this side of understanding Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. Your fifth grader could probably give you a better understanding of how it works than we can, but here's a short explanation:

Technically Speaking

Reverse osmosis is a separation process that uses pressure to force a solvent through a membrane that retains the solute on one side and allows the pure solvent to pass to the other side. More formally, it is the process of forcing a solvent from a region of high solute concentration through a membrane to a region of low solute concentration by applying a pressure in excess of the osmotic pressure. This is the reverse of the normal osmosis process, which is the natural movement of solvent from an area of low solute concentration, through a membrane to an area of high solute concentration when no external pressure is applied.

This process is known for its use in desalination (removing the salt from sea water to get fresh water), and it has also been used to purify fresh water for medical, industrial and domestic applications since the early 1970s.

Fresh & Delicious Drinking Water

Reverse Osmosis
The good news is, you don't have to be a rocket scientist (or even smarter than a fifth grader) to enjoy the benefits of a reverse osmosis filtration system. Reverse osmosis will deliver fresh and delicious drinking water, free of many potential harmful pollutants. It is ideal for cooking, making coffee and ice, baby formula, pet feeding, plant watering and more - at a mere fraction of the cost of bottled water.

Start enjoying the taste and good health of fresh, pure drinking water today. Remember, just call Moe!

In the News

Governor Schwarzenegger
SACRAMENTO, CA. Governor Schwarzenegger has signed legislation that could potentially outlaw the use of lead in plumbing products in California. This new law, Assembly Bill 1953, will be enforced in January 2010 and will limit the lead content of plumbing products used to convey or dispense water for drinking and cooking to 0.25%. The previous California law allowed 8% lead content for most plumbing products and 4% for plumbing fittings and fixtures.

Bathroom Humor

The local Police Station was broken into last night and the culprit made off with the station house toilet. According to the Chief, the police are baffled. "We have nothing to go on," the Chief stated.
