The filter in your air conditioning system is responsible for removing harmful particles from your indoor air supply. Over time, the filter can become clogged with dirt, pollen, and debris. When this happens, it is unable to provide protection from contaminants, which could compromise the quality of your home’s air. Thus, in order to keep your family safe from air pollutants and allergens, you should regularly change the filter.

How Often Should You Do This?

As a rule, you should change your air filter at least once every 2 months. However, if you have a lot of pets or live in an area that has a lot of pollen or dust, it may be necessary to change the filter once a month. While this may seem like a lot, it is actually necessary to keep your air conditioner functioning properly and your indoor air supply protected.

For vacation homes or single occupant homes that aren’t around a lot of air pollutants, changing the filter once or twice a year could be sufficient. However, for people with allergies, or for those who own more than 1 pet, changing the filter every 20-45 days is recommended. Thus, how often you should change your air filter varies, depending on your unique situation.

Filters are fairly easy to replace, and they are also relatively inexpensive. You will need to check the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating when choosing a filter for your system. This will help ensure you don’t install a filter that has too tight of a mesh, which would cause your system to work harder because air would not be able to pass through as easily.

Changing Your Air Filter Has Many Benefits

Clogged or dirty filters can actually cost you more money than replacing them on a regular basis. Your air conditioner will have to run harder to cool your home because the filter won’t let air through. This will lead to higher utility bills each month.

Furthermore, a clean air filter will help your unit be more energy-efficient. The system will be able to keep your home cool and comfortable while using less energy. Clogged filters can also cause your system to malfunction or stop working entirely, leading to expensive repairs. Thus, as the weather starts to warm up during spring and summer, changing your air filter is important to keep your system running smoothly.
