Dirty air filter
|

One of the most important maintenance tips homeowners should follow is changing their air conditioning and heating air filter.

Changing air filters is a crucial step in ensuring your HVAC system is performing at peak efficiency. Furthermore, consistently changing your air filter can drastically improve your home’s indoor air quality.

But how often should you change your air filter?

The following are several factors to consider:

  1. Type of air filter your air condition unit needs
  2. The overall indoor and outdoor air quality of your home
  3. Number of occupants in your home
  4. Number of pets in your home

For a typical 1” – 3” air filters, the manufacturer specs—most likely—say to change them once every other month. However, general guidelines do not apply to all. For example, if you have allergies, then you may need to either replace your air filters more frequently or upgrade them. On the flip side, if you live in a remote area with a relatively small population, changing your air filters once every year would suffice.

Based on the factors listed above, here is a guideline to how often you should replace your air filters:

  1. Seldom used home or single occupant homes without allergies or pets – Change every six to 12 months
  2. Average suburban home without pets – Change every 90 days
  3. Average suburban home with a cat or a dog – Change every 60 days
  4. Average suburban home with multiple pets or have allergies – Change every 30 to 45 days
