In Southern California, December brings a welcome relief from the heat of summer. Temperatures drop dramatically, and people begin to use their heaters for the first time all year. However, many are not aware of how to effectively heat their home while keeping energy costs to a minimum.

Here are some tips for improving your heater’s efficiency this winter:

  1. Use a programmable thermostat. If you are at work all day, or you leave for the holidays, having a programmable thermostat can help ensure your home is performing at maximum efficiency. You should set it at 55 degrees if you will be gone for days at a time, and you can adjust the temperature for different times on different days of the week. This can decrease your energy use when you are not home, and allow you to still enjoy a comfortable temperature when you are.
  2. Utilize your vents. You should remove any furniture from in front of the vents. Having unobstructed and clean vents can let the warm air flow better and heat your home more efficiently. Thus, you should have your vents inspected, and keep them uncovered.
  3. Keep the cold air out. During the day, it is a good idea to let in sunlight to warm the house. However, once the temperature outside goes down, you should shut all doors and windows, and use curtains. The more insulation you have, the warmer the rooms in your home will be.
  4. Get to baking. Using the oven dramatically increases the temperature of your home, especially the rooms near the kitchen. If you bake, broil, or use a convection oven on a regular basis, you can enjoy a naturally warmer home while eating delicious food all winter long. This will make your heater run less and save you money on utility bills.
